The Plant Orphanage

It began with just a few inherited plants on a shelf in our kitchen. Soon, however, Asia was smuggling home abandoned greenery from her job as a plant tech, Kelsey was making sly side-trips to Sprout Home and all of a sudden, we simply couldn't stand the apartment without a fresh bouquet of flowers.

Then, in the dead of winter, we began to collect...

and collect ...

... and collect.

Until finally our apartment, tucked just paces away from the hubbub of Bedford ave, had become a plant orphanage. Inevitably our gaze moved past our walls of green, out beyond the old iron fire escape, and down into our very own Brooklyn backyard. Surrounded by chain-link, smothered in pine needles, and neglected by all but the birds, our backyard suddenly seemed like the perfect spot for the creation of a veritable garden paradise.

With these lofty dreams (and a hefty order from Seed Savers) we begin our endeavor-- to make mountains of herbs from a molehill of dirt and chart our progress here, with you lovely people.
